Parisian architect, Manuelle Gautrand, has shared her massive cultural, recreational and retail center for Triangle de Gonesse, France with us. The competition proposal intends to showcase a variety of European countries’ features – with regard to retail, leisure and cultural amenities – by organizing specific areas for designated countries. The project intends to become a destination for not only the French, but all tourists to Europe. “The goal is to give a first vision of Europe, before continuing the trip,” explained the architects. The architecture of the complex developed into a series of loops which meet programmatic and contextual needs. Each branch extends into the landscape, allowing the surroundings to be closer and mixed with the indoor and outdoor programs. The project is protected by a performative roof that allows for the collection of water, the capturing of solar energy (more than 20 000 sqm of photovoltaic cells will cover the roof surface), and provides some public spaces for all to enjoy the beautiful views of the city.
Completed in December 2011 by Keikan Sekkei Toyko Co. Ltd, the newest building at the Reitaku University takes into account all elements of landscape as the ‘interface of man and nature’. The architects took inspiration from the University’s philosophy of ‘Jinsouboku ni Oyobu’, which translates as ‘Affection reaches beyond humans extending even into plants and trees’. Taking the philosophy into careful consideration Keikan Sekkei’s vision was the creation of an environment that improved both the quality and quantity of campus green space. One which would encourage students to interact daily with the landscape surrounding them, resulting in an understanding and appreciation of nature that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Over the weekend, OMA’s design for the stage set at the historic Greek Theater in Syracuse, Sicily, was inaugurated with the performance of Aeschylus’s Prometheus Unbound, directed by Claudio Longhi. The scenography features three temporary architectural devices that reinterpret the spaces of the theater, which dates from the 5th century BCE. OMA’s interventions will be dramatically exploited and adapted at strategic moments within this summer’s cycle of plays staged by the Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico, which also includes Euripides’ Bacchae (dir. Antonio Calenda) and Aristophane’s The Birds (dir. RobertaTorre). The first intervention, the Ring, is a suspended walkway that completes the semi-circle of the terraced seating, encompassing the stage and the backstage, and giving actors an alternative way of entering the scene. The Machine is a fully adaptable backdrop for the plays: a sloping circular platform, seven metres high, mirroring the amphitheatre. The backdrop can rotate, symbolizing the passage of 13 centuries during Prometheus’s torture; split down the middle, it can also be opened, allowing the entrance of the actors, and symbolizing dramatic events like the Prometheus being swallowed in the bowels of the earth. The Raft, a circular stage for the actors and dancers, reimagines the orchestra space as a modern thymele, the altar that in ancient times was dedicated to Dionysian rites.
The design for the World Horticultural Expo 2014 Theme Pavilion consists of the Main Expo Hall, a Performance Hall, Conference Centre and a Media Centre. UNStudio's winning competition entry for the Qingdao Expo 2014 Theme Pavilion focuses on the relationship between Science and Nature. Whilst maintaining their individual identities, the buildings become gently absorbed in the landscape. The architecture of the Theme Pavilion responds to the dominant skyline of the mountains surrounding the Masterplan by means of carefully composed roofscapes on the individual buildings. These roofs are envisioned as elevated landscaped plateaus, each addressing a different portion of the Masterplan with its inclination and terracing, providing panoramic views which extend far into the surrounding landscape.
Hangzhou has long been known for its lake district and green tea plantations. UNStudio’s approach to the masterplan for the New District therefore embraces Hangzhou’s longstanding identity whilst connecting the Old City Centre with the new Central Business District. By means of green corridors, water corridors, loose plantation structure, green roofs, urban cooling and warming strategy, green courtyards and sustainable living, the New District masterplan aims to bring Hangzhou to the forefront as the most advanced and sustainable urban plan of its scale. The design aims to provide a sustainable approach in terms of ecology, economy and social cohesion by introducing a variety of public and commercial spaces which are strongly linked to the natural landscape. Within this new development both commercial development and amenable social locations reinforce each other through interconnection.
The Scitech mixed-use redevelopment is located on a crossing point of traditional and modern developments in Beijing. The massing strategy for the plot focuses on creating optimal links between the mixed-use programming of the redevelopment, whilst interweaving a dense low rise development with a high rise component. In the low rise portion of the new development, a series of connected courtyards organize the different programmes around the user flows to form an urban carpet. This provides outdoor and indoor spaces which combine programmes through internal and external links. This five to seven storey high podium is designed as an undulating landscape that organizes the traffic flows on its perimeters, whilst providing interior green and sheltered spaces for pedestrian access. The high rise towers emerge from the low rise development and provide singular usage for hotel and office premises.
Under construction - Hanjie Wanda Square is a new luxury shopping plaza located in the Wuhan Central Culture Centre, one of the most important areas of Wuhan City. Hanjie Wanda Square is a luxury shopping plaza which will house international luxury brand stores, world-class boutiques, catering outlets and cinemas. UNStudio’s approach combines both contemporary and traditional design elements in one concept. The concept of synergy of flows is key to all of the design components; the fluid articulation of the building envelope, the programming of the dynamic façade lighting and its content design, the pattern and space articulation of the public landscape surrounding the building and the interior pattern language which guides customers from the central atria to the upper levels and throughout the building.
Arnhem Central converts several regional routes and high speed trains to Germany. As passenger numbers will continue to grow, the railway infrastructure is being substantially revitalized. On the train station level a new 4th platform has been added and all the platform roofs have been replaced. The design concept for the new platform roofs provides a sense of light and space. Large roof lights, which together with the structural spans, add to a positive experience of the transfer platforms and surroundings. The elevated footbridge is fully integrated in the design, connecting the different platforms with each other and with the North entrance of the train station. The electrified system has also been integrated into the roof structure, giving a uniform appearance across all platforms.
